North London is a designation of the
northern part of the city of London. It is generally considered to include all
districts north of the River Thames, as opposed to those in the south of the
River Thames, which are considered to be in South London. The River Thames
divides Greater London into two parts; and the Northern part of that division
is designated North London. This northern part contains most of the historic
areas, including the City, East End and the West End, where a majority of the
London Underground network can be found.
The North London area comprises the
City of London and the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Brent,
Camden, Ealing, Enfield, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Harrow,
Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Newham,
Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Westminster.
In
1965 Camden, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, Kensington and
Chelsea, Tower Hamlets and Westminster were designated Inner London boroughs
and Barking and Dagenham, Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow,
Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Newham, Redbridge and Waltham Forest were
designated Outer London boroughs.
